*So ashamed that I actually paid money to and watch this. Free the whales!
**on another note i was wondering is what educational benefits could anybody egt from these shows.. sea world states it's educating people.. i'm trying to figure out what.. high high the whale can jump? how many spins it can do? flips? are these really educating or entertaining. it's one or the other.. kids would get a better experience actually watching them in the wild, if you can afford sea world tickets and the travel you can afford a bot ride and see the real thing
**im all on board with freeing these whales it horrible with their conditions and what not .. but just for a second I pause and still watch these videos on youtube.. just the way that this big killer whale can be so gentle and playful knowing its limits with these human beings is amazing....but yet let the whales go after awhile they should maybe perform for 5 years and then go..
**I love when it was shamu splash
**
Also, since I've just been looking up tons of facts about orcas... apparently Seaworld murders the orcas parents and siblings just to capture the orca whales they use to perform.pretty interesting article I found: "Opinion: SeaWorld vs. the Whale That Killed Its Trainer"
These are obviously really smart animals, but also terrifying predators - they need to be free. That's obviously why they're killing people. But they never kill or even attack a human in the wild. Really really smart animals.
**I remember from a wildlife documentary that orcas are probably the smartest animals on the planet, besides humans.
What's really interesting is that a wild orca has never attacked a human ever. But, there have been dozens of attacks on humans by captured orcas. It's not hard to put 2 and 2 together... the orcas don't want to be caged or trapped by humans.
**It's not that we think they "belong" anywhere in particular - that's your childish approach to these things. The real question is if the animals can have worthwhile, and maybe even better, lives in an athletic training regime and with lots of interaction with humans and intellectual challenges the wild could never hope to give them. Think of it similar to how millions of humans prefer to live in cities doing intellectual work rather than having to till the fields all day by hand.
**To call Blackfish a documentary is pretty laughable by the way. Basically, what you have there are a collection of disgruntled employers and people who make animal-rights pornography for a living. Its makers literally make a living out of tickling your emotions, primarily by making you project human concerns onto animals to produce outrage based on assumptions about animals that are just absurd. Blackfish almost paints a picture of Tilikum being a political animal rising up against oppressors.
**"they deserve to be free."As in, they deserve to be allowed the chance to starve to death and get drowned in fishing nets? Look, being "free" can be very brutal as well. You would certainly not prefer to be "free" if it meant dumping you in some cave somewhere. These Orcas have different lives than they would in the wild, sure, but they're also being pampered, are loved to death, and have all sorts of advantages.
**
"they aren't with their natural families." Naturalistic fallacy. Moving on.
"they are made fools of on a daily basis." Are you kidding me? People watch them because they are awesome and graceful creatures and love interacting with them.
**
when i was a child i visited seaworld ohio many, many times. i was an orca lover from the start. it was always my dream to be a whale trainer, to be able to touch and love on those amazing creatures at my own will. but seaworld ohio closed, and my dream was crushed.
but now, as an adult, i see the truth behind seaworld. i see that these magnificent creatures belong in the ocean with their families. it breaks my heart to see all of these people who think they belong in a tank. educate yourselves.
**I think I may have said this to you once, but I'll say it again, how do you know that "the truth behind SeaWorld" is really the truth?
**they sure don't have a problem moving the other whales around from seaworld to seaworld. i'm sure they could move tilikum. and no, he hasn't been in captivity all of his life. he spent his first two years by his mother's side, where he would still be today if it weren't for the greed of humans.
**Some examples of this is that they can be made to recognize and react to symbols and sounds, but have a much harder time with language constructs. They are trained/programmed with the same dumb classical conditioning regimes used to train dogs - not by explaining to them what the goals are and it's unlikely that they understand any of it on a deeper level.
***that's such and awful analogy to use, whales and cats. whales have been wild for millions of years, and cats have been domesticated for probably thousands. just because an orca is born in captivity doesn't mean it's insticts are magically gone. you can just tell that the tanks are too small, and if you can't see that then you're blind. they aren't with their natural families. they are made fools of on a daily basis. they deserve to be free.
**It's so sad that only after 'Blackfish', people understand how horrible is the life of this animals in Seaworlds..
**I seen this show in CA. It was a wedding gift from my in-laws. As they know I love the underworld life. But after I watched Blackfish. I would love to see all SeaWorlds closed down. They are wrong for breaking up the pods. Ony to make money and line their pockets. Had they pulled Tillikum that trainer would have never lost her life. The whales need to be left where the good Lord placed them in the oceans.
**I don't get the concept of this. Little boy sees the amazing whales in the wild then decides he wants to be part of keeping them in captivity? Although by looking at the SeaWorld instagram their marketing has worked as I see so many kids saying they want to be a SW trainer. Really sad.
